Who’s Happier? Managers or their Assistants?

It depends, writes Professor Amy Wrzesniewski of Yale University.

It depends on how they see their work.

Turns out we have a choice.

Do we have a job?  A career?  Or a calling?

We decide.

Amy has studied doctors and nurses, teachers and librarians, engineers and analysts, managers and assistants.

Across each field, roughly one-third of people see their work as a job (“a necessity that’s not a major positive in their lives”), one-third see their work as a career (something to “win” or “advance”), and one-third see their work as a calling (“ a source of enjoyment and fulfillment where you’re doing socially useful work”).

It’s not the work itself, but how we see the work that matters.
