1: If we “see AI as just another Google or a tool for writing better emails, we’re selling ourselves short,” Geoff Woods writes in The AI-Driven Leader: Harnessing AI to Make Faster, Smarter Decisions.
Instead, AI is “a strategic Thought Partner,” Geoff notes, “ready 24/7 to help us make faster, smarter decisions.
“When we recognize AI’s potential this way we gain an edge in a fast-changing world.”
Geoff defines strategic thinking as “the process of defining our strategy, then aligning our actions to achieve our most ambitious goals.”
Imagine standing at a whiteboard with a Thought Partner, magic marker in hand. We share an idea. Immediately, our thought partner begins building on our idea. Before we know it, we are “engaged in a fast-paced, back-and-forth dialogue where it seemed like one plus one could equal eleven.
“This is the power of engaging AI as your Thought Partner,” he writes. “This is the big idea in AI-driven leadership.”
2: As we begin the AI era, Geoff believes we have an opportunity to move our focus from operational thinking to strategic thinking. “Our humanity lies in our ability to think strategically, be creative, and communicate and collaborate to solve complex problems,” he observes. “AI presents a unique opportunity for us to reclaim these human strengths and have machines adjust to meet our needs.”
One concern about AI is that it will replace us. “Many are concerned about losing their jobs, while others worry about the broader impact AI might have on humanity,” Geoff notes. “Their fears are legitimate. The difference between AI’s impact being net positive or negative lies not in the technology itself but in the leaders using it.”
And, “while AI can replace many things, it can’t replace the value of human connection and leadership,” he explains. “Technology transforms industries, but human guidance is essential in shaping a future that prioritizes well-being and ethical use.”
The reality is that AI “lacks the context and perspective we bring to the table. It lacks our leadership,” Geoff writes. “This is why we must remain in the role of Thought Leader. As our Thought Partner, AI can help clarify our thinking, enhance our decisions, structure communication, analyze data, challenge our biases, and narrow our focus.
“It is a powerful tool if we know how to harness it correctly.”
3: Time moves fast. An MIT study showed that six out of ten jobs today did not exist in 1940.
“That is because the skills required today did not exist back then,” Geoff notes. “In the 1940s, manufacturing skills were in high demand. Today, the skills that are highly valued have shifted toward those associated with well-paid professionals and service-based work.”
Today’s skills will be different from those we will need tomorrow.
“Skills and processes change over time,” he observes, “but this doesn’t mean we will lose our job. It means our roles might evolve, either within the same company or in a different one. This shift doesn’t replace us as a human; it transforms how we work from the old way to the new way.
“View this as an opportunity,” he says, “to advance our career, develop valuable skills, and find more fulfillment. Resist, and we may struggle with the transition and risk losing our competitive edge.”
Our mindset changes when we let go of our worries about being replaced and embrace the opportunities that AI provides.
“It’s important to understand that while AI will require us to change, it will not replace us; instead, it will enhance us,” Jeff notes.
Another perspective: “AI won’t replace us; those who harness AI will replace those who don’t.”
He believes we are at a turning point in history: “Learn the skill of harnessing AI ethically to build an advantage, or cling to outdated ways of working and risk being left behind.”
The big opportunity we have is to embrace our role as strategic thinkers. We are the Thought Leader. AI is our Thought Partner.
“This partnership allows us to shift from operational overwhelm to strategic clarity, a mindset shift that is essential for leaders in the AI-driven world,” he predicts. By doing so, “we can make better decisions, solve problems more effectively, and drive accelerated growth.
Geoff’s recommendation? “Embrace this new partnership. It can help us achieve things we previously thought were impossible. It certainly has for me,” he says.
More tomorrow.

Reflection: How can I shift my mindset to see AI not just as a tool, but as a true thought partner that enhances my strategic thinking and decision-making?
Action: Experiment with using AI as my thought partner this week by bringing a real strategic challenge to it, prompting it for ideas, and reflecting on how this collaboration shapes my thinking.
