1: New year. New us.

That’s a possibility. But what precisely are we going to do differently?

One of my big learnings last year was around the power of intrinsic motivators.

We often set goals where our reward is getting a promotion or a raise. Or being recognized for winning a game. These are examples of extrinsic motivators. Things outside of us.

There’s nothing wrong with extrinsic motivation. But the research shows there is something more powerful.

Intrinsic motivation comes from activities and behaviors that we find satisfying. Gratifying. Fulfilling. The reward comes from within us.

To perform at the highest possible levels, we must learn how to tap into our intrinsic motivation.

In his book The Art of ImpossibleSteven Kotler identifies five specific intrinsic motivators: Curiosity, passion, mastery, autonomy, and purpose.

2: One of my 2024 goals is intentionally amplifying these drivers in my life.

Take purpose. Which is about making a contribution to something bigger than ourselves.

Where do we find meaning in our work and in our lives?

Purpose answers the “why” question: Why does this matter?

Or: Above and beyond making money, what difference do I make?

Steven Kotler’s business partner, Rian Doris, tells us (watch the full video below) that even a glimmer of purpose can make a significant impact in our lives.

3: Last year, I used the framework in The Art of Impossible to craft my own purpose statement: “To glorify God by unlocking human potential, connecting deeply with others, and savoring the experience of being alive.”

My plan to amplify the power of purpose in my life is straightforward. As I start the year, I plan to track my time and spend some time each day reflecting on which specific activities are aligned with my purpose and how.

More next week!

Reflection: How am I tapping into my intrinsic motivators like purpose, passion, curiosity, autonomy, and mastery? Do I rely mostly on extrinsic or intrinsic motivation?

Action: Journal about the answers to these questions.
